Has your dog started barking more than usual? Excessive barking can have serious reasoning behind it. Its best to find the cause of the problem and try to control it before it gets out of hand. The first thing you need to do is ask yourself what could possibly cause the barking. Attacking your dog in a negative way for his barking without knowing whats causing it can increase the bad behaviour.
- Is it possible that your dog has become over stimulated? If so then things like someone simply walking across his path can set him off. You should try blocking any visuals that may come across his path if possible.
- Has he become aggressive or dominant? If your dog has become aggressive the barking could indicate he is marking his territory and in this case training is definitely in order.
- Could your dog simply be bored? Its possible for animals to become bored just as easily as a human. If this is the case then take him for a walk, or add more daily activities to his schedule.
- Have you noticed a specific person or object that triggers the barking? If so either try to remove the object or attempt to recondition the dogs response in a different manner.
You should never reward your dog for bad behaviour including petting or giving him treats. Training and effective punishment should be used when its needed otherwise your sending the wrong message to your dog.
If things such as bringing him in the house at night or crating the dog isn’t curving the excessive barking it may be time to use products such as muzzles or shock collars. There are other products such as surgical debarking but should only be used as a last result.

If you have decided to purchase a new puppy you will also need to create a shopping list for essentials that you will need for him. When first bringing your puppy he will need basic supplies such as a food dish, water bowl and of course food.
I would suggest buying a crate for carrying your puppy depending on his size. To save money you can purchase a crate based on the size he may be when he becomes an adult dog. A crate that has dividers allow you to enlarge the size as he grows. Make sure to include bedding such as a cushion or mat. Place it on the floor on the inside of the create. You can even add a dog pillow if your feeling generous. You will also need to purchase either a gate or exercise pen for your new puppy. This will allow you to confine them in safe play areas throughout your house whether you are home or away.
Puppy toys is a must not only for entertaining then but also for training and teething. The perfect choice for teething puppies would be a hard or nylon rubber bone. It allows them to strengthen their teeth. Always make sure to purchase toys that can not be easily swallowed by your dog so try avoiding small objects as balls or caps.
Leashes and collars are also necessities for a new puppy. The two most common collars purchased for small dogs are everyday wear collars and training collars. If you are unsure of what kind you need to buy talk to your veterinarian for suggestions according to your dogs size and breed.
If you plan on having your dog professionally groomed you won’t need as many tools as you would as if you where to do it at home but you will still need basic grooming tools such as clippers, brush, and flea combs.
The most basic necessities of course is the food and water dish. Purchasing non-tippable dishes is the recommended. Also while you can choose from an assortment of materials for the dishes to be made from the most common for safety reasons is sturdy stoneware or stainless steel.
The food that you choose for your new puppy should be balanced diet as well as age appropriate. Make sure to keep fresh water and food in his dish. Also remember this is the first night at home with your new puppy so while you feel nervous and anxious hes probably also feeling the same way. Pet him often and play with him. Showing your dog love is the best start in your new happy life together.

While many choose to take their dogs to a grooming salon or pay others to do it some choose to groom their dogs at home. If this is the case you will need a few grooming tools. Depending on the breed of dog some may need more grooming than others. So lets run over the basics that you will need:
Brushes and Combs - You will need brushes for styling, separating layers for trimming, or just to make your dog coats shine. The three basic types of brushes are wire-pin, bristle, and slicker. Combs come in a variety including medium-toothed, fine-toothed, and wide-toothed. The reasons for using combs are similar to those of using a brush.
Blades and Clippers - These can come in an assortment ranging from price and brand. It really depends on your personal preference but they are used for grooming your dogs fur. Clipper vacuums may be purchased as an extra to assist when grooming your dog with clippers.
Shears and Scissors - For thinning or cutting your dogs hair you will need to use scissors or shears. Scissors can be bought in three styles including blunt-tipped, straight or curved.
Bathing Supplies - The bathing supplies that you may need will vary depending on the size of your dog and breed. You will need conditioner, shampoos, lotions, and even dog soap. You may also opt to purchase special equipment for bathing your dog.
Nail Clippers - These are a must have when grooming your dog. You can choose from different sizes according to your dogs breed.
There are many other things that can be purchased to assist in grooming your dog but are not required such as a grooming table, or specialized de-matting equipment. It really depends on how much you want to spend and the effort you want to put into grooming your dog appropriately.

You have been interested in adding to your family with a new puppy or dog. You have the financial ability, stable environment, and all the love in the world to give but how do you find the right dog? Of course its easy to visit a local pet store in which you will find adorable little puppies running around but what about the puppies that have been abandoned or left to unfortunate luck of the previous owners? Have you thought about possibly adopting a puppy? There are hundreds of shelter dogs that are in need of a new loving home to be cared for and treated as though they are just as important as any other dog. Of course before you actually sign the papers to adopt a new dog there are factors you need to think over and discuss with your family. Most of these dogs have already been rejected or abandoned which is what landed them in shelters to begin with.
You need to make sure you understand the maintenance and work it takes to raise a dog. You need to maintain the dogs grooming, health care, vaccinations, daily exercise and of course make sure they are given the food and water they need. Purchasing a dog or accepting one as a gift on impulse is never a good idea. You should always be aware of the responsibility that it poses.
Once you have decided a shelter dog is right for you its time to decide whether to purchase a puppy or an adult dog. A puppy offers a clean slate and no bad habits to break. On the other hand you have no clue how big the dog will become or how hard it will be to train the dog, including how much maintenance and grooming they may require. Puppies also require more time and work than an older dog would. They need constant supervision and of course training.
For those who do not have the time or desire to raise a puppy, an adult doggy would be the ideal solution. Most adult dogs are calmer and already have some type of training. They also show more gratitude for the simple things their owners do for them compared to a puppy.
Either way you are sure to find the perfect dog for you and it may help to bond with them by taking a few obedience classes. It will help to prepare your dog for its new environment while allowing them that even though they must behave you are now there for them permanently.

One of the most important things aside from buying a new puppy and bringing him into your life is making sure he has the best of everything including health care. You will need to find a veterinarian who will do their best to keep your puppy in the best condition possible. You want to have piece of mind that your dog will remain healthy and happy. So how does one find the perfect vet? There are several roads that will lead to success of this adventure.
First off trying asking around your neighborhood especially friends and family that are pet owners. Find out who their pets see and why they chose to stick with them. Jot down any pros and cons for each potential veterinarian.
Before you begin calling different clinics you will need to decide what factors are important to you such as personalized services, costs, and possible distance. If you feel as though you would be more comfortable in a smaller facility you could always go with a clinic that has 1-2 doctors and usually is self employed. The size of veterinarian clinics can range in size depending on where you live. The only thing about a small practice is that in the case of a complex medical case your dog may have to be transferred else where for proper care. So again there are many things to keep in mind.
You can also get ideas from the National Veterinary Association who has a list of the top qualified vets in your area. They can often give referrals based on your needs.
Once you have been able to compile a list of potentials then its time to call for a face to face interview. If you feel as though they may be able to meet your needs and what you have been looking for then give them a try. You can always change later if you are dissatisfied.

Keeping your dog entertained may be easily done with a houseful of toys or objects that will grab their attention, but while most owners don’t realize it there are many things that pose health risk to your dog. Normal house hold items can become choking hazards for your dog. You should always make sure the toys that your puppy plays with should be to large to swallow or too tough to be bitten into small pieces.
There are many items that you should keep away from your dog but a few include things like aluminum foil, string, yarn, cords such as phone lines or TV cords, glass items, any type of small balls (ping pong, cat toys), or bones that can splinter. Each of these items can either choke your dog, cause obstruction in the intestines if swallowed, and obstruction of other body parts which could result in death.
Purchase toys that are age appropriate for your dog as well as recommended by veterinarian’s.

When purchasing dog food keep in mind a few key things such as your dogs age, any allergies or special diet orders from your veterinarian. Some dogs require food with extra carbohydrates or nutrients. A dogs main dietary requirement is energy. They need food that will give them energy based on their physical needs, age, and activity level.
High quality foods with little or no meat should be preferred for your dog. Most dogs are fed commercially marketed products and its not always the best choice even if its the most priciest. Whether you decide to feed your dog home made foods or buy them an exclusive selection you should always discuss their diet with the veterinarian.
You can tell how well a dog is fed or cared for by their outer appearance. For a dog that is well cared for with a balanced diet they will often have shiny fur, bounds of energy and bright eyes, while others who are not receiving proper care may be listless, slow or just non playful.

If you are either in the process of training your dog or looking to start training you will notice quite a few collars to choose from. This includes the martingale, choke chain, limited choke collar, head collar, pronged collar, electronic collar, and the no bark collar. Each collar is made different and has a specific reason for being used.
The no bark collar is used to control your dogs barks. If excessive barks or howling begins the collar will will give out a loud voice, release small amounts of citrus spray, and may do other types of things. These are used to discourage the dog from barking uncontrollably.
The limited choke collar is a type of collar that is rarely used anymore due to safety reasons but when it is used its to keep the dog from running off. The collar tightens around the dogs neck as he pulls away.
A head collar is similar to a muzzle and even provides the same service but is meant for you to lead the dog instead of them leading you.
The martingale collar is similar but a more basic choke collar. They tighten as the dog pulls but will never to the point of discomfort. Even though no pain will be felt it allows the owner to keep their dog restrained.
Pronged collars are often viewed as cruel because of the way they look but are actually just used for intimidating the dog. It merely lets them know they are pulling to hard on the lead. Its a good collar to use for large unruly dogs.
Electronic collars are used as a control measure for dogs. These collars are used by remote control by the owner. They should be used only when the dog is behaving negatively not as a type of punishment for everything they do wrong.
If you are using a collar for training or controlling your dog always use them wisely and appropriately. If you are unsure how a certain collar should be used then read up on them or ask the sales person to demonstrate before using them and causing potential harm to your dog.

Before you rush out to purchase a dog muzzle you should read up on the true purposes behind them and how they are properly used. The two types of muzzles used are occlusion and basket. The basket muzzle allows only enough room for your dogs mouth to open and shut, while the occlusion keeps the dogs mouth completely shut.
In short-term situations including grooming procedures you should only use the occlusion muzzle. Make sure to never leave this one on your dog if its intended for them to be outside. After a bit of time it could prevent the dog from panting which can lead to a heat stroke or over heating.
There are two different types of basket muzzles to choose from for your dog. If you are having biting issues from your dog or need a total restraint then the wire basket is the most secure one to use. While using a plastic or soft nylon basket will work for others giving the dogs more comfort and still giving you control.
Always make sure you have proper measurement before choosing a muzzle to prevent injuries or harm to your dog. Some dogs may have to adapt to the idea of wearing a muzzle so always make it seem like a positive situation.

Dog harnesses are often used by pet owners as an alternative for leash attachments. While the more common uses are for Seeing Eye dogs that is used by those who are disabled or blind you will see different reasons for the harness depending on what area of the world you are in.
The harness confines the dog much more than a collar does. While the collar only goes around the neck, the harness has a loop that covers the torso as well. It has straps that connect between them which adds extra reinforcement for more control over your dog and any situation that may arise. Unlike a collar its less likely that a dog will be able to choke with the harness or slip away as he may from a collar. The popularity of these collars are increasing especially amongst those with smaller breed dogs.
